Cardi B Weighs In on 'Girls' Controversy & Says She Has Been With 'A Lot' of Women

Rita Ora came under fire earlier this week after the release her new pop single “Girls.” Artists including Hayley Kiyoko and Kehlani called Ora out for including lyrics like “Sometimes, I just wanna kiss girls, girls, girls/ Red wine, I just wanna kiss girls, girls, girls,” which they said contributed to continued stereotypes about same-sex female love simply being a phase.
One the featured artists on the track, hip-hop sensation Cardi B, still wants her fans to go and listen to the song. Taking to Twitter on Tuesday morning (May 15), Cardi wrote, “Listen to 'GIRLS' by Rita Ora ft me @BebeRexha @charli_xcx,” while adding a note apology: “We never try to cause harm or had bad intentions with the song.”
Cardi also went on, in the same tweet, to say that she felt the song was an accurate expression her own experiences. “I personally myself had experiences with other woman, shiieeett with a lot woman sic],” she wrote. “I thought the song was a good song and I remember my experience.”
The “Bodak Yellow” singer took the moment to also apologize for her past use gay slurs, loosely referencing a controversy last year when her fiancé Offset used the phrase “I cannot vibe with queers” in a freestyle verse and she defended him. “I know I have used words before that I wasn’t aware that they are fensive to the LGBT community,” she wrote on Twitter. “I apologize for that. Not everybody knows the correct ‘terms’ to use. I learned and I stopped using it.”
When a fan tweeted to her that she had a similar experience with using the word “dyke,” Cardi retweeted her and wrote, “Exactly me too. My own friends be like 'I’m a dyke' so I never thought it was a fensive word,” she wrote “I was like wtf.”
Ora took to Twitter on Monday to formally apologize for the song's lyrics. “I would never intentionally cause harm to other LGBTQ+ people or anyone,” she wrote. “I have strived to be a contributor to the LGBTQ+ community throughout my entire career and always will be.”
