A resurgence the Ice Bucket Challenge has prompted BTS to donate to the the Seungil Hope Foundation building fund for South Korea’s first hospital and treatment center for ALS patients.
The seven-member chart-topping group was nominated to participate in the donation-based viral challenge by Jinusean’s Sean on Instagram on Tuesday (June 26). They responded in turn by sharing a certificate donation for an undisclosed amount on Wednesday.
“We have come to participate in the Ice Bucket Challenge after being tagged by Sean,” wrote the group, translation by Soompi. “We are very happy to join in on a great cause. We hope that more people will show interest through our participation. Thank you.”
In his challenge, Sean noted that fans BTS’ V and Jungkook had also already donated around 10 million KRW, around $9,000 USD, to the Seungil Hope Foundation.
Originally popularized in 2014 as a way to raise awareness and funds for ALS –amyotrophic lateral sclerosis–, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, treatment, the Ice Bucket Challenge resurfaced in South Korea earlier this month, and many celebrities have participated in it. Many have made donations to the Seungil Hope Foundation, which is named after Park Seungil, a prominent basketball coach in South Korea who suffers from ALS.
