Brandy performed “The Boy Is Mine” at Essence Festival this weekend, and made sure to remind the crowd the song is hers, too.
During the end the song, Brandy changed the lyrics from “the boy is mine” to “the song is mine” –possibly throwing shade at Monica, who originally collaborated on the track with her.
“The Boy Is Mine” was released in 1998 as a joint single and won the Grammy for best R&B performance by a duo or group in 1999. The song's success was partly due to the rumors an unspoken rivalry between the two singers, who each included the song on their individual albums — Monica's was titled The Boy Is Mine.
The singer's managers eventually released a joint statement blaming the media for the “disturbing” rumored negativity, and the beef appeared to be over when the two reunited on “It All Belongs To Me” in 2012.
