Brand Nubian remains to be one the most influential rap groups in hip-hip history. In the 1990s, the group -- rappers Lord Jamar, Sadat X, Grand Puba and DJ Alamo -- were known for their socially-conscious lyrics over gritty hip-hop beats. Nearly 30 years later, TV One’s award-winning Unsung program will examine the group’s rise and fall in the rap game.

According to a press release, Unsung will explore the group members early beginnings growing up together in New Rochelle, N.Y., before eventually becoming Brand Nubian. The group kicked f the ‘90s with their debut LP, One for All, which is considered a hip-hop classic.

But as Brand Nubian struggled with fame, creative issues caused bitter dissension in the group. Grand Puba left the quintet to pursue a solo career while Sadat X and Lord Jamar pressed on and delivered the group’s second and noteworthy album, In God We Trust.

“Brand Nubian later reunited in 1998] before calling it quits again as members encountered personal drama, including arrests, painful losses, and continuous controversy,” reads the press release.

The Unsung episode will also feature interviews with each the members as well as rap pundits talking about the group’s legacy in hip-hop.

Unsung: Brand Nubian will air on Sunday (April 15) at 9PM ET.
