Blood Orange’s First Mixtape ‘Angel’s Pulse’ Feat. Toro y Moi, Tinashe, Arca & More: Stream It Now

After only announcing it four days ago, Blood Orange — also known as Devonté Hynes — unveiled his first mixtape, Angel's Pulse, on Friday (July 12).

The 14-track mixtape is his second project in under a year and includes features from Toro y Moi, Kelsey Lu, Ian Isiah, Justine Skye, Project Pat, Gangsta Boo, Tinashe, Porches, Benny Revival, Arca and Joba.

While it explores a variety of genres, it's pretty heavy on bluesy guitars, keys and drum machines, making it a perfectly minimalistic mid-summer mixtape. The simplicity makes sense, as Hynes shared that he doesn't really like to spend too much time on anything in a recent interview with New York magazine.

Promo for this album has been slim to none, with the exception of a few Instagram posts. Hynes said the mixtape is “somewhat of an epilogue” to his 2018 album Negro Swan, when he spoke to New York. In regards to calling it a mixtape, Hynes said, "I fell toward the word mixtape in terms of talking with everyone, friends and label and whatnot. In my ideal world, I just put it out, and people can do whatever."

Hynes' dream is to not have to label anything: "It’s just the next group of songs."

"One key difference is that I wasn’t really ever alone when I was making Negro Swan," he told New York. "There were always people in the room, whether they were just talking or singing, or friends hanging out. With this one, it was a lot of isolation and then bringing people in. Things were finished a lot quicker than I usually finish them."

The song "Berlin" was recorded in Berlin, while "Baby Florence (Figure)" was made in Florence, Italy. The other songs were scattered, with some taking place at New York's Electric Lady, a rented house in LA, Helsinki and Dubai.
