Each week, Billboard Dance looks at songs & albums rising on Billboard’s dance charts.
Genesis Jones, “With or Without You”
Los Angeles-based singer/model Genesis Jones strikes a pose on Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart (dated July 7), debuting at No. 43 with “With or Without You,” her first chart appearance. The track (not a remake U2's 1987 classic the same name) was co-produced by PJ Bianco and DJ Snake. Previously, Jones, whose great aunt was gospel legend Mahalia Jackson, recorded vocals in support DJ Snake's remixes various Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Rihanna tracks. “With” was remixed by C-Rod, Dirty Werk and Danny Diggz, among others.
Jones tells Billboard, “'With or Without You' originated from PJ Bianco, after he and Snake had formed a relationship. They contacted me to come to his studio to see if we could vibe together and make some sexy music, and this song was the result. Its message is essentially, 'I'm doing me, baby. You're either in or you're out.' The first line the song, 'I'm Joan Arc the battle,' was the first line I wrote, and the rest it all fell into place. Snake seriously creates magic in my opinion, so I'm so stoked and grateful to have had this opportunity.”
M-22 featuring Medina, “First Time”
M-22, the duo British/German producers Matt James and Frank Sanders, makes its way onto Dance/Mix Show Airplay for the, fittingly, first time with “First Time” (No. 34). “First” is the third chart hit for featured Danish singer Medina, who topped the list with her last entry, “Addiction,” back in 2011, and hit No. 6 with “You & I” in 2010. “First” takes the majority its airplay from core-dance affiliates SiriusXM's BPM, KNHC (C89.5) Seattle and Music Choice's Dance/EDM channel, according to Nielsen Music. A week ago, “First” became the M-22's inaugural Billboard top 10, reaching No. 8 on Mexico Ingles Airplay.
Robin Schulz & Piso 21, “Oh Child”
Osnabruck, Germany-based DJ/producer Robin Schulz, teaming with Columbian act Piso 21 (consisting Juan David Castano, Juan David Huertas, David Escobar and Pablo Mejia Bermudez), debuts at No. 46 on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs with “Oh Child.” The eighth entry for Schulz, dating back to 2015's five-week stint at No. 1 with “Prayer in C” (with Lillywood), “Child” is the first for Piso 21, which reached its highest spot yet on Hot Latin Songs on March 31 with “Dejala Que Vuelva” (No. 16). “Child” earned 821,000 U.S. streams in the tracking week.
