Becky G Says ‘Mala Santa’ Reflects Her Journey Growing Up in the Spotlight: Watch

Becky G caught up with Billboard backstage at the 2019 Latin AMAs Fest Summit on Tuesday (Oct. 16), where she discussed how it feels to be receiving the Extraordinary Evolution Award at Thursday's Latin American Music Awards and what fans can expect from her debut album, Mala Santa.

Speaking of receiving the Extraordinary Evolution Award at the Latin AMAs, Becky G tells Billboard that it is “very surreal” because, although she is only 22 years old, she feels like she has been doing this for a long time.

“To be acknowledged and to be receiving an award like that is truly an honor,” she says. “But I feel like I’ve gone through so many different phases to get to this point, and I’m still just getting started, which is the best part.”

Becky G adds that while it is exciting to be honored for her past work, she also sees the experience as the beginning of a “new era” because she will be releasing her debut studio album Mala Santa the very same day.

On the subject of her album, Becky G explains that having been signed at age 14, this record feels like it has been eight years in the making. “I’ve learned so many things along the way that have prepared me and inspired me for this very moment,” she shares.

As for why she decided to name the album Mala Santa, Becky G notes that when she recorded the song of the same name, it felt perfect because she felt like she was the industry’s mala santa.

“Everybody met me at such a young age and I went from that transition of that young sweetheart that everybody first met to woman, in front of everyone, and it wasn’t the easiest transition,” she confesses. “It was hard for some people to accept … but I think people now understand and see that I am still very much so that sweetheart, that little angel that they first met, I’ve just grown up into a woman.”

She adds that it was also important for her to include bonus tracks on the record like "Sin Pijama," "Mayores" and "Cuando Te Besé" because they were huge parts of her success as to who she is as a Latina artist today.
