The first episode airs Friday with interviews with Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and Chris Martin.
Apple Music global creative director and Beats 1 host Zane Lowe is bringing Apple Music’s recently-launched New Music Daily playlist to life with a new weekly show premiering Friday (Oct. 25) at 12 p.m. EST.
New Music Daily will be a mixture of music, artist interviews and commentary, with the first episode slated to feature Taylor Swift (appearing to talk about her forthcoming big-screen musical Cats), Selena Gomez and Chris Martin. The news follows the launch of Beats 1’s Rap Life With Ebro Darden last week, inspired by the platform's popular Rap Life playlist.
Format aside, Lowe tells Billboard the show will stay as loose and unpredictable as the streaming age itself.
“Don't expect anything on a regular cadence,” he says. “It could be weeks where we have a live performance, there could be weeks where it's more of a formal interview. It could be weeks where there's two or three people coming in from different parts of culture, could be fashion, could be sports, could be anything… We've kept the format deliberately flexible because that’s the way that people are consuming things and the way that artists are moving.”
Per its name, New Music Daily the playlist — a rebranded version of the former Best of the Week — is updated with brand new music on a daily basis and regularly features more than 60 tracks from around the globe. As the show's host, it will be Lowe’s job to choose which of those songs to highlight, from established acts to emerging voices who he worries “could get lost in that flurry.” More than anything, he’ll try to serve as a guide for music fans in a time that unleashes more content than ever before at a lightning-fast pace.
“I think streaming is just, we've opened up the floodgates now for artists to move in any way they want, in any direction they want, sort of whenever they want,” he says. “And that's given us the most exciting time ever to be a music fan.”
New Music Daily With Zane Lowe will air every Friday at 12 p.m. EST. Listen to the show here and stream the New Music Daily playlist here.
