Ben Askren’s UFC debut at UFC 235 this previous weekend ended with a controversial submission victory over former Welterweight champion Robbie Lawler, after referee Herb Dean stopped the combat within the first spherical.
Lawler, who landed a number of huge pictures on Askren within the opening spherical, later discovered himself in a bulldog headlock and gave the impression to be knocked out, simply as Dean known as the combat considering that Lawler’s arm had gone limp.
However, footage confirmed that Lawler was giving the ref a thumbs up, and he was greater than alert after Askren loosened his grip. Naturally, Lawler immediately protested the loss.
Today, UFC has launched audio which reveals that Lawler was simply as forgiving when talking with Dean instantly after his preliminary outburst.
Transcribed by Anton Tabuena of Bloody Elbow:
Lawler: “What the [expletive] are you doing?!”
Dean: “I assumed you…”
Lawler: “I didn’t. What the [expletive]?!”
Lawler: “I do know. It’s alright.”
Lawler: “Herb. Herb. Hey. Hey, don’t [expletive] fear about it. You’re a [expletive] hell of a ref.
Dean: “No, man. No. I don’t perceive how, like… I noticed your arm (go) limp, I grabbed it. But I didn’t know.”
Lawler: “after which I gave you a thumbs up.”
Dean: “I didn’t know. I didn’t see you give me a thumbs up.”
Lawler: “It occurs man. If [expletive] occurs.”
