The Temptations are Apollo royalty. It was backstage at the Harlem theater that the group came up with the lyrics to "My Girl" alongside Motown legend Smokey Robinson, which went on to reach No. 1 and achieve platinum status in the following year. Over a half-century and several attendance records later, Billboard has learned that the The Temptations and Otis Williams will be honored at the Apollo Theater's 2019 Spring Gala set for June 10.
The benefit will feature a special performance from The Temptations and Williams, their last living original member. The renowned group will also be inducted in the Apollo Walk of Fame days prior to the fundraiser (June 7). Other artists gracing the theater stage include Estelle, Jose James, Liv Warfield, Morris Day and The Time, and Black Violin.
“It is a real honor to take part in the prestigious Apollo Theater Walk of Fame and 85th gala celebration," Otis "Big Daddy" Williams relays to Billboard. "I’m looking forward to sharing our music and reflecting on the wonderful and vivid memories that Paul, David, Eddie, Melvin and I spent at the Apollo Theater, a beloved national treasure. The Temptations and the Apollo have created inspiring and enduring legacies for generations to come, and to look back through the lens of our experiences at the Theater will be very special, and I’m happy that throughout the years we didn’t get the hook."
The 2019 Spring Gala takes place at the famed Apollo Theater on June 10 at 7 p.m. ET.
