On Wednesday (March 20), GLAAD announced that talk show host Andy Cohen will be honored at the 2019 GLAAD Media Awards for his continued support and representation for the LGBTQ community.
The Watch What Happens Live host will be presented this award by his long time friend and star of Sex and the City Sarah Jessica Parker.
Cohen will receive the Vito Russo award, named after one of GLAAD’s founders and ACT UP activist Vito Russo, which is presented each year to an openly LGBTQ media professional who has worked to promote the acceptance of LGBTQ individuals in mainstream culture. The host will be added to a list of past honorees including Ricky Martin, Alan Cumming, Samira Wiley, Anderson Cooper and more.
“Andy Cohen is a force in the entertainment industry who consistently prioritizes and celebrates LGBTQ stories,” GLAAD president and ceo Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement. “Both on-screen and behind-the-scenes, Andy’s trademark brand of LGBTQ advocacy has resulted in some of the buzziest and entertaining culture-changing moments.”
Cohen will receive the award alongside fellow honorees including Madonna, who will be receiving GLAAD’s first ever Advocate for Change Award, the cast of FX’s Pose, Samantha Bee and Don Lemon. Concurrently, GLAAD will also be awarding stars Sean Hayes, Beyoncé and Jay-Z during the Los Angeles ceremony.
The New York ceremony for the GLAAD Media Awards will take place on May 12, and will be broadcast on Logo.
