In the same way that an up-and-coming actor or singer will tell you that they're honored just to be nominated for an Oscar or a Grammy Award and rub elbows with big stars for one night, the typical top 10 contestant on ABC's American Idol is likely to say they are psyched just to get a chance to sing for superstar judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan twice a week.
But over the course of the season, this year's strivers have gotten plenty of face time, and tons of helpful feedback, from the judging panel too. So this week, Billboard asked the top 10 to dream a little dream and reveal what song they'd want to sing with one of the judges, if given a chance to share the stage. Their answers might suprise you.
Laine Hardy: Commodores' "Easy" with Lionel Richie
"I’d want to do 'Easy' with Lionel because I used to sing that with my brother all the time at home."
Laci Kaye Booth: Katy Perry, "Thinking of You"
Booth says this is the first Perry song she fell in love with. She finds Perry extremely inspirational and this song brings up "a lot emotions" for her.
Madison Vandenberg: Katy Perry, "Thinking of You"
"I relate to Katy Perry the most because she’s the only female on the judging panel and she’s a pop artist, which is the type of artist I want to be. And I love that song, I cover that song with my band at home and I think it’s a gorgeous song."
Dimitrius Graham: Katy Perry, "Roar"
"Always loved that song and she killed it at the Super Bowl."
Alyssa Ragu: Katy Perry, "Unconditionally"
"I would love to do that song with Katy because of the lyrics behind it. Its true meaning is about loving someone regardless of their flaws. It’s such a beautiful song that I would die to sing with my idol."
Walker Burroughs: Lionel Richie, "Hello"
"Because I have always loved that song and I sang it in my first audition on a whim, so to actually prepare it and GET to sing it with Lionel Richie would be one of the coolest moments and best full circles OF MY LIFE."
Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon: Commodores, "This Is Your Life"
"Because I like the self-empowering lyrics."
Uché: Commodores, "Brick House"
"I would love to sing [it] with Lionel! He’s shown me so much support through all of this. It would be an amazing way to say thank you for everything he’s done for me on this journey. And 'Brick House' if funky AF, i like that."
Wade Cota: Katy Perry, "ET"
"I can relate to that song on a lot of levels."
Alejandro Aranda: Lionel Richie, anything
"Anything with Lionel that I could put my own spin on."
