AJ McLean caught up with Billboard’s Annie Reuter on the red carpet at the 2019 Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday (Apr. 7) to chat about his new single “Boy and a Man,” the Backstreet Boys’ upcoming tour with Baylee Littrell and more.
Speaking of his new single “Boy and a Man,” McLean tells Billboard that having his song on country radio is “phenomenal.” He notes that he had so much fun making the music video for the “tearjerker” of a track, adding that the most challenging thing about making the visuals was convincing his wife to appear in it as she doesn’t like to be on film.
McLean also chats about how he defines country music and shares his thoughts on breaking down the barriers between genres.
“I think in time, hopefully, as things keep transcending and walls keep coming down, hopefully they’ll embrace new sounds, new takes on country music,” says McLean. “But country will always have a very near, dear place in my heart... Some of the production that’s on my album may be a little more on the urban/pop side, but the lyrical content and the melodies are definitely country.”
He also reveals that he can’t wait for the world to hear his new album, and said that while he has to finish writing and recording a few more songs, he hopes to release it this summer.
In the interview, McLean discusses the upcoming Backstreet Boys tour as well, on which the band will be joined by Brian Littrell’s son Baylee as their support act.
“I support anything that [Baylee] does,” says McLean. “He’s beyond talented and he’s got a pretty awesome dad, too, who I kind of know pretty well. I’m excited to have him opening up for us on the US tour… He’s been with us since he was a kid. He’s only known music.”
