While most high school graduations were canceled in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, students at North Clayton High School were able to celebrate with a drive-by graduation sponsored by the Atlanta rapper and his TRU Foundation.

On Monday, the high school located in College Park, Ga. welcomed seniors, whose school year was cut short. Balloons spelled out “Congrats” over the blue stage as graduates drove through in their cars to receive their diplomas while classmates and faculty honked and cheered them on from the sidelines.

With a mask over his face, 2 Chainz delivered the commencement address in the school’s parking lot. “Congratulations to everybody that’s not walking but riding through today. There’s a lot going on in the world,” said 2 Chainz, who is a North Clayton High School alum himself.

He also shouted out the single mothers and shared some inspirational words with the Class of 2020. “I just want to let you know you got somebody that believes in you, someone that is showing support as you go into this crazy world, all this COVID stuff and racism, know that somebody still loves you, know that somebody’s willing to give back.”

Added 2 Chainz, “I want to come out here and show my support. It’s not about the financial aid or anything like that. It’s just about the genuine support I have.”

The rapper made headlines recently when his Atlanta restaurant Escobar was shut down for violating COVID-19 guidelines. He has remained an active member of his community and donated food from Escobar to the homeless in Atlanta amid the pandemic.
