Several highly anticipated projects got a jumpstart this week. After Selena Gomez released a pair of tunes from her long-awaited next album on Wednesday (Oct. 23), Louis Tomlinson and Coldplay both dropped new tracks from their forthcoming albums — both of which were also announced this week. And perhaps the most anticipated of them all, Kanye West's Jesus Is King, has finally arrived.
Along with new music, there were a handful of huge reveals this week too, from Nicki Minaj’s marriage announcement to Harry Styles’ news that he’ll be performing and hosting on Saturday Night Live next month. On top of all of that, the American Music Awards nominees were unveiled!
There’s plenty more exciting happenings packed into just five days, courtesy of BTS, Queen, Lizzo and Kesha. Check out some of the week’s biggest moments below.
Lizzo returned to No. 1 on the Hot 100
Though Lizzo’s No. 1 streak was broken by Travis Scott last week, that proved only temporary as “Truth Hurts” returned to the top spot of the Hot 100 (chart dated Oct. 26). The bounce back marked Lizzo’s seventh week atop the chart, which ties the all-time record for the longest rule for a rap song by a female artist (tied with Iggy Azalea and Charlie XCX’s 2014 collab “Fancy”). Meanwhile, it was also a big week for YoungBoy Never Broke Again, who nabbed his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with AI YoungBoy 2.
Coldplay announced a double album
Following a old-timey black-and-white photo of “The Wedding Band & Dance Orchestra” that Coldplay posted on Saturday (Oct. 19), the British group confirmed that the cryptic teaser (which read November 22, 1919) pointed toward new music — and a lot of it. Coldplay sent vintage letters to select fans revealing that a double album — titled Everyday Life, with one disc called Sunrise and the other Sunset — will arrive, indeed, on Nov. 22. (The band officially confirmed the double album on Thursday.)
Nicki Minaj revealed she got married
On Monday night, the rapper announced the big news on Instagram in a sneaky way: A video of “Mr” and Mrs” mugs as well as “Bride” and “Groom” hats, with the caption "Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty 10•21•19." Though Minaj revealed plans to marry her beau of one year, Kenneth “Zoo” Petty, on her Queen Radio show in August (and she changed her Twitter display name to “Mrs. Petty” soon after), that didn’t stop her Barbies or her famous friends like Christina Aguilera and Winnie Harlow from freaking out over it. Minaj has yet to share any photos from her nuptials, but according to a recent interview with The Shade Room, Minaj may not have had a grand celebration anyway.
Cardi B & Ozuna were revealed as the latest Fast & Furious cast members
Looks like the Fast & Furious franchise is adding even more Latin flair for its next film! Veteran star Vin Diesel first took to Instagram on Monday to congratulate Ozuna on his work in Fast & Furious 9, then on Tuesday shared a video with Cardi B. Though neither post revealed what the artists’ roles will be in the film, Cardi B declared “this is going to be the best one!"
Drake showed off his really big rings
Just in time for the 2019-2020 basketball season kickoff, Drake reminded basketball fans around the world that his Toronto Raptors are the reigning NBA champions. The rapper posted two pictures on Instagram on Tuesday (Oct. 22) of his custom-made championship ring, which features countless diamonds, the Raptors’ old dinosaur logo and one of his nicknames, “The Boy.” While Drake’s rings resemble the diamond and ruby encrusted ones each Raptors player received, his bling comes in at a whopping 30 carats. Dude wasn’t kidding when he said “I got a really big team/ And they need some really big rings.”
Selena Gomez gave fans the song they’ve been waiting for
Selenators were rejoicing as the clock struck midnight on Oct. 23, when Selena Gomez dropped her new single, “Lose You to Love Me.” Though Gomez hasn’t been totally absent from the music world for the past four years — teaming up with the likes of Kygo, Marshmello and DJ Snake and releasing her own one-off singles like the Talking Heads-sampling “Bad Liar” — “Lose You to Love Me” officially marks the beginning of her next album, which is her first since 2015’s Revival. Fans were quick to share their excitement on social media, with Gomez’s bestie Taylor Swiftjoining in by calling the heartfelt stripped-down track “a triumph.”
But Gomez had a surprise in store: Just before the day ended, she unveiled a second track and video. Titled “Look At Her Now,” the song seems to the confident and colorful answer to the self discovery filled, black-and-white video for “Lose You To Love Me.”
BTS broke (another) Guinness World Record
The K-pop superstars now officially hold the title for the fastest time to reach one million followers on TikTok, the Guinness World Records organization announced on Wednesday morning (Oct. 23). BTS joined the app on Sept. 25, and according to TikTok, reached one million followers in just three hours and 31 minutes. Certainly impressive, the feat actually isn’t the only Guinness World Record BTS holds: The group also currently holds the record for most-viewed YouTube video in 24 hours (for their Halsey collab, “Boy With Luv”), and they were the first K-pop act to reach No. 1 on the U.S. albums chart with both 2018’s Love Yourself: Tear and this year’s Map of the Soul: Persona.
Kacey Musgraves also set a Guinness record — but not for her music
Who knew National Color Day was a thing, and that you can break a world record by coloring? Apparently Kacey Musgraves did, as the country star received the Guinness World Records title for the world’s largest display of coloring pages on Tuesday (Oct. 22) — yes, National Color Day. Musgraves compiled submissions from fans in more than 30 states to make a rainbow-shaped and -colored display (which includes 1,550 coloring pages and weighs 500 pounds) at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville.
The AMAs nominations were revealed
Award season continues! The nominees for the American Music Awards were announced Thursday morning (Oct. 24), with Post Malone leading the pack with seven nods including artist of the year. Ariana Grande (who is also up for artist of the year) and Billie Eilish earned six each, and Lil Nas X and Taylor Swift each received five. The awards will air live from Los Angeles on Nov. 24 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. Check out the full list of nominees here!
Queen unveiled a touching fan-made video for “You Are the Champions” campaign
To celebrate “Bohemian Rhapsody” becoming the first pre-1990s video to reach one billion YouTube views, Queen enlisted fans from around the world to create music videos for “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Don’t Stop Me Now” and “A Kind Of Magic” — and the results are epic. The rock legends unveiled the compilation videos (in partnership with YouTube music, Universal Music Group and Hollywood Records) on Thursday (Oct. 24) as part of the You Are The Champions initiative. Check out “Bohemian Rhapsody below, and the other two here.
