Thirty-six years. Yes, it has been almost four decades tears, nail-biting and just an overall sense gloominess that hovered over Peru and its soccer (fútbol) fans since the “blanquirroja” (or white-red) last set foot on a World Cup field for the 1982 World Cup in Spain.
Things changed last year when they became the last team to qualify for the 2018 Russia World Cup, guided by Argentinean coach Ricardo Gareca, known as “The Tiger.” The long-awaited dream is now a reality, and Peru confronts a new challenge. Back in December, Peru was drawn to play in Group C alongside Denmark, France and Australia, marking the first time it faces these teams at a World Cup.
As the country’s forward, Paolo Guerrero was granted leave to play after a temporary suspension over a positive drug test, and now with a complete squad, the dark cloud is gone. Abounding in ecstasy, Peruns decided to get creative. With their hearts in their hands and a pround sense appreciation, many celebratory songs surfaced online.
Here are 10 Perun songs to celebrate the country's return to the World Cup:
Pisko – “Gol de Perú”
Jorge Cuba feat. Pepe Alva – “Nación”
Carlos Iglesias – “Guerrero”
Pelo A’mbrosio – “Al Mundial”
