Lorene Scafaria will direct the film based on a New York magazine piece about former strippers who concoct a plan to steal tens thousands dollars from their Wall Street clients.
Jennifer Lopez has signed on to star in the stripper story Hustlers at Scores.
Annapurna is developing an adaptation the New York magazine article "Hustlers at Scores," centering on former strip club employees who turn tables on their Wall Street clientele by creating a scheme that allows them to steal tens thousands dollars from their wealthy clients.
Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend for the End the World, The Meddler) is directing the film and also wrote the script based on the 2015 piece by Jessica Pressler, which was based on a true story. Annapurna and Gloria Sanchez are producing the Robin Hood-type tale with Scafaria co-producing
Lopez will play a former stripper and the ringleader to the group ambitious women who take their plans getting their full cut too far.
Scafaria’s script takes place in the late aughts in New York City in the wake the financial crisis and explores the toll it took on the livelihood the dancers who relied on their Wall Street clientele. “The film is an empathetic look at women and men, our gender roles, what we’re valued for, what we’ve been told is our value in every movie, TV show, every corner culture. Men have been told they're worth the size their bank accounts. Women have been told they’re worth the symmetry their faces, their bodies, their beauty and that’s what this film is based on. The rules the club are the rules the world,” said Scafaria.
Lopez, recently named the 2018 recipient the MTV Video Music Awards' Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, was previously seen on the big screen in 2015's The Boy Next Door, 2005's Monster-in-Law and 2001's The Wedding Planner. On TV, she has produced and served as a judge on dance competition show World Dance.
“There is no other actor who could embody this raw and dynamic character with such complexity, humanity and intelligence. It’s always been her. She’s fucking Jennifer Lopez.” Scafaria added.
Lopez and producing partner, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas will executive produce along with associate producer Alexandra Brown. Lopez is repped by CAA and Hirsch Wallenstein.
