The spectacle took place at Opening Ceremony’s show, which was a collaboration with 'Drag Race' winner Sasha Velour.
Christina Aguilera shocked attendees Opening Ceremony’s New York fashion week show with a surprise performance alongside several drag entertainers. The event, which took place at Le Poisson Rouge, was a collaboration with RuPaul’s Drag Race royalty Sasha Velour.
"I think it's been on the most challenging things I've ever done," Velour told Billboard. With the approval Opening Ceremony's Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, the Brooklyn-based queen handpicked every element the show, from lighting, to the script, to casting. "It is literally a dream come true. It's a testament to what hard work and a very strong point view how things should be will lead to eventually."
Velour kicked f the evening by explaining that over 40 LGBTQ models and performers would share the stage for the fashion show. "I hope this is what the future looks like," she exclaimed to the audience -- which included Nicki Minaj, Troye Sivan, Hayley Kiyoko and Kim Petras. "Not just on your stages or on your screens, but every day in your life, being uplifted just like this -- belonging just like everyone else and looking fucking fabulous."
Several drag artists took the stage during the evening: Drag Race star Jiggly Caliente high-kicked through a mash-up Beyoncé and Kat Graham while Minaj filmed the energetic performance from her front row seat. Björk's make-up artist -- and entertainer in her own right -- Hungry performed Robyn's "Monument" while Sivan bopped his head.
The show cumulated in a surprise appearance from Aguilera, who was joined by Velour, Caliente, Hungry, Shea Coulee, Miss Fame, West Dakota and her drag doppleganger Farrah Moan. She belted out her verses from "Fall In Line," while the queens lip synced to Demi Lovato's verses.
"Drag performers have been seen as a low form entertainment for a while and to be in this space where we're being treated like valuable performers is world-changing," Velour gushed after the show. "And I hope that will multiply for everyone -- not just for me and this cast, but all the incredible drag performers out there."
This isn't the first time Aguilera showed her appreciation for the art drag: she was a special guest judge on the premiere RuPaul's Drag Race season 10 premiere. In fact, she was introduced as her look-a-like Farrah Moan and delivered an uncanny impersonation the drag queen before breaking character with one her signature vocal riffs.
Billboard Pride was on-site and captured the drag spectacle. Check it out below.
